GREG ION, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR


Greg Ion was born in Canada- Son of Gordy Ion who was inducted in the Canada National soccer Hall of Fame

Greg grew up playing Soccer and Lacrosse in British Columbia winning several youth national champions in both sports for the Cliff Ave United FC and Burnaby Lakers lacrosse club.

Greg played Professional soccer from 1980- 1993 in the NASL, North America Soccer League, Including stints with Portland Timbers, Tulsa Rough Necks, Vancouver 86ers, Montreal Manic and in the MISL with Kansas City Comets, Chicago Sting and the Los Angeles Lasers

Greg was also inducted in the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and Canada soccer Hall of fame while a member of the Vancouver 86ers (Whitecaps) and member of the 1986 Canada World Cup Team- Mexico world Cup 1986

Professional Career

Greg created United soccer Academy and built a successful soccer development program supporting over 2000 players annually with a variety of different programs camp and  clinics in Washington state

He went on to develop one of the top soccer clubs in Washington (Washington Premier) which won three youth National championships girls and Boys and become one of the original USSDA national academies chosen by US Soccer.

Greg became the National Promotion Marketing manager for adidas Soccer USA. Under his leadership they successfully guided the US Youth soccer in support of their national Olympic Development program and the USYSA national championship sponsorship

As the adidas USA manager he supported the promotion of soccer brand during the 1998 World Cup France and the 1999 women’s world Cup in the USA.  His responsibilities included the execution of brand awareness during the Tournaments and support of the feature athletes including USA stars Kristine Lilly, Shannon Macmillan and Joy Fawcett

Greg also has coached all levels of soccer athletes and has guided many of his players to College soccer programs. He successfully completed his US Soccer national B and A license in 1998-1999

He has directed soccer clubs in Washington state, Arizona and California

Currently

Greg is the Senior Vice President of Sports Development- Net Result at Galway Downs In Temecula California

Galway Downs is a 240 acre equestrian Facility with over 20 soccer and Lacrosse fields.

Under the leadership of Denis Ferguson- President of Net Results they have successfully elevated the sports development at Galway Downs working with some of the Top youth Organizations including California South Youth soccer, American Youth soccer as well as national Brands Target and Dicks Sporting Goods and is supporting the growth of the Professional MLS club Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC)- grass roots youth camps programming in Southern California 

Galway Downs now hosts some of the top Lacrosse programs including Adrenalin Lacrosse, and the Pacific Lacrosse festival.

In 2020  Greg will support the continued growth of sport development with future projects of additional sport fields, Training facilities, Sport accommodations as well the integration of National clubs and International programming and tournaments at Galway Downs.
